Visual Guide to Inspecting Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings on Reinforcing Steel

A visual inspection should be performed at the galvanizer’s facility to ensure compliance with the coating specification. Varying appearances may occur and may or may not affect the overall quality of the product.  A simple visual inspection can assure that the galvanized coating is incompliance with the proper specifications.

Another important aspect of inspection is ensuring that the coating thickness complies with the appropriate specification.  The thickness of the coating directly relates to the life of the rebar.  Therefore inspecting the coating thickness is an important component to the overall inspection process.  The inspection process at the galvanizing plant includes a step where the coating thickness is verified to meet the appropriate specification.  However, to ensure compliance, the galvanized coating thickness can be easily measured using a simple device.  Click the link below to learn more.
