Bare Spots/Coating Holidays

Gross uncoated areas should be rejected. However, small areas resulting from damage after galvanizing may be repaired using an acceptable repair compound. Some of the causes of bare spots are:

1. Incomplete surface cleaning: Remnants of paint, oil, grease, scale, or rust cause uncoated areas; the molten zinc does not bond to such residues.  In cases such as these the reinforcing steel is stripped of the coating and re-galvanized

2. Welding slag: In assemblies that have been welded, slag deposits from welding procedures are resistant to the normal cleaning solutions used in the galvanizing process and must be mechanically removed.

3. Field Cutting: Galvanized rebar may require to be cut in the field in order to properly fit design specs.  Cut ends should be repaired accordingly.
